World Telecommunication and Information Society Day

17.05.2020 World Telecommunication and Information Society Day
Today is a very important day.

May 17, 1865 marked the foundation of the International Telegraph Union, which was later renamed as the International Telecommunication Union.

In 1849, the first international telegraph line was established, which required compatible telegraph equipment and parameters of transmitted signals in different countries, as well as solving numerous organisational, legal and, sometimes, political issues. New communication equipment required new international treaties to regulate issues that had never been on the agenda.

The first International Telegraph Convention and International Service Regulations were signed by 20 countries including Russia in Paris on May 17, 1865.

The Telecommunications Day has been internationally celebrated since May 17, 1969.

In 2006, the day took its current name and was declared as such by the UN General Assembly.
